AAA/Alternative/Modern Rock

TAXI # D060120AP

ALTERNATIVE POP/ROCK SONGS [no instrumentals] with great hooks and vocals a la the Go! Team, Jem, Animal Collective, Death Cab For Cutie, the Dandy Warhols, the Shins, Gomez, etc. are sought by the Music Supervisor for one of Network TV's most popular and longest-lasting sitcoms. Lyrical themes aren’t too important, but “huge, shimmering, dramatic” choruses certainly are to be considered for placement in the upcoming season. They have placed TAXI songs on this show in the past and are looking for more great material. Broadcast quality needed [excellent home recordings are OK]. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. For ground submissions, please enclose a S.A.S.E. if you would like a response. As always, we will notify everyone via e-mail, whether your submissions have been Forwarded or Returned. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 pm, Pacific Standard Time (California time), Friday, January 20, 2006. TAXI # D060120AP

I like the presentation here. The overall arrangement feels like it could be refined. I like the verses, but the chorus could have a stronger impact. As it is now the song feels a bit one dimensional. I almost could hear a more dynamic approach to give the song a more apparent sense of dynamics.

Title: Vronsky

I also like the attitude here. The vocal performance has a good vibe to it. I still find the arrangement to be a bit linear. A more obvious chorus could be beneficial in this case.

Above comments apply to this song as well. The high vocals are a bit extreme, but do add something unique to the presentation.

Style

Female fronted punk rock.

Overall Comments:
Michael, this is a solid submission for this listing. I think stylistically you guys are right on point. There is some good attitude that was captured in these songs. Your singer has an intense vibe to her performances. Unfortunately, I feel that this listing was looking for songs that had a bit more hook like the Buzzcocks or Green Day. Something with a bit more dimension in the overall song writing.

Sound Quality:
Well - Recorded
This is a good raw recording. The essence of the band has been captured.

The main reason you were not forwarded for this listing is:
In the context of what this listing is asking for, I think it really comes down to a matter of song writing and overall presentation. You guys have some great attitude, but your arrangements feel a bit one dimensional. Give another listen to the bands listed as examples here and check out the way their chorus' stand out and pull you in.

Great POWER-POP ARTISTS/BANDS & SONGS a la the Raspberries, Matthew Sweet, the Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Big Star, etc. are sought by a super-cool Indie Label with great distribution. They’re seeking to sign artists and to find songs for a couple bands on their roster. In the A&R exec’s own words, I’d love to find the next Marshall Crenshaw. He ran this as two different Dispatch listings in Sept. but hasn’t found any bands/songs to his liking, so if you were forwarded for D050907PP or D050907PS, please do not submit the same material. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics/bio/photo [if applicable]. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. Really cool verse. In the second half try to stay on the beat more to create a stronger sense of flow. Maybe less syllables could help.

Solid melodies. Again on this track the CH phrasing gets a little off beat. Keep a close ear on your timing this can concrete the hook.

Another cool track. Some of the vocals doubles are a little out of tune. A tambourine could help the CH to pop more.

Style

Overall Comments:
Hey Michael, I really enjoyed listening to these tracks. I really like your melodies and your lyrics are original and engaging. I think that in order to really take these songs to the next level you could tighten up your phrasing and your vocal doubles. There are slight pitch and timing issues on a ll the tracks. You've displayed really strong son writing chops on this demo and I look forward to hearing more from you. You have a unique style while maintaining commercial viability. Try to get your choruses to really pop in your productions sometimes something as simple as a hand clap can create a real strong payoff.

Sound Quality:
Not great, but clean enough for this listing
The mix on track 2 is a little unbalanced. Synths get a little loud and the guitar could be a little more defined through its tone.

The main reason you were not forwarded for this listing is:
Not hook driven enough.

SINGER-SONGWRITER/AAA SONGS with a bit of an edge a la Sufjan Stevens, Damian Rice, Liz Phair, Ryan Adams, Beth Orton, Rhett Miller, etc. are needed by a new Music Publisher/Entertainment Group based out of Toronto for licensing to Film/TV/Advertising/Multimedia projects. Great vocal and instrumental performances are key -- everything’s gotta sound top notch. Lyrically, they’re open to a wide array of themes. They asked us to be quite selective in what we forward to them, so please submit your very best. They recently ran this same listing in Dispatch, but now need more material in a couple months. Overall Comments:
Hey Michael, Great photo in your bio! In The Day After there is a vibe in the verse that is so cool but seems to get a little lost in the chorus. When you bring in the distortion and the synth it felt like the vocals got a little stepped on. The chorus is catchy but you might want to lose some of the instrumentation to let the vocals shine through more. Your lyric writing is very impressive. Especially in track one. It took me on a journey I'd never been on and I really liked it. Thanks for the listen, keep up the writing and good luck!

Sound Quality:
Not great, but clean enough for this listing

Mixes are a little unbalanced at times. Strings in track 1 get a little loud. Try to keep vocals number one priority.

Great first line. You could try and vary the melodies in the verses and the chorus slightly to make individual lines stand out and keep the listener focused.

Style
Not so much straight-ahead rock as alternative.

Overall Comments:
Hey Michael, your songs feature original lyrics, good musical and melodic parts. The musicianship is mostly tight, the vocal delivery suits the songs well in most places. You could try and vary the melodic lines slightly and take them to a different register. Especially the choruses could use some melodic variations to make the main lyrical lines stand out more. The arrangement of "The Day After" could benefit from a new musical and melodic part. I wish you good luck with everything.

Sound Quality:
The Sound is fine.

The Manager of a current platinum-selling rock band is seeking a truly UNIQUE ARTIST/BAND under the general MODERN ROCK umbrella. Think of bands who made a splash when they hit the airwaves with their individual and unique sound -- artists such as Beck, Stereolab, Mazzy Star, Cake. He’s not looking for clones. While you must have a unique sound/look, your music must have the potential to be commercially viable and radio-friendly -- he’s not looking for an underground band that will never hit the airwaves -- and yet he’s looking for something new & untapped. And while he’s open to just about ANY STYLE OF MUSIC [Electronica, Rock, Punk, Pop, Urban, etc.], he’s NOT looking for Country, Jazz, or World artists. The manager himself will screen the submissions for this listing. Please submit two to three songs online or per CD/cassette, include photo/bio.
